As a long-time advocate of Quality Management, I see a lot of that here. I particularly liked the warnings against leadership behaviors that are dangerous in a non-profit environment, detailed and well-illustrated with striking examples. One of these involved “begging” (not what you’re thinking). I was not as impressed with “hiring for the job” rather than a particular mix of applicable but generalizable talents and skills. But his argument did make me think about the topic, indeed to keep thinking about it. That’s the sign of deep expertise from a writer, evident in his long career with leading non-profits. Also, the author’s advice on handling “creative” types was quite interesting and practical. All in all, this is an excellent, well-written book that anyone attempting a leadership role in a non-profit (or any other type of organization) should buy and read carefully. Highly recommended!

Wow, this book is honestly quite extraordinary. While the title could lead one to believe that the advice and insights presented in this book could only apply to someone operating or working inside a non-profit organization, this is far from the case. In reality, the book covers a considerably wider range, and much of the information presented could be applied to the reader’s daily life. The author did a tremendous job writing this book. Excellent execution from the author with this book, I highly recommend checking it out.

Wow!! I wasn’t expecting that Peter! Although I don’t run a not-for-profit, many of these principles can be applied to much of everyday life.
Peter writes from a place of experience, humility, and wisdom, which was refreshing in this day and age.
I will be drawing from the principles in this book for years to come. Do yourself a favor and check it out. His gifting with the pen or keyboard, in this case, was engaging. In what could be a dry and dusty topic, Peter weaves story and fascinating historical accounts into practical steps of flourishing in the area of leadership. Engaging from start to finish. Yes, it applies to not-for-profit sectors, but so much more. Well done!

I was intrigued by one of the forwards in the book, “Never, however, have I read a book that better-integrated leadership principles, business imperatives, cultural observation, Christian spirituality, and missionary initiative.”
As the intro says, this book “is full of advice-giving and tidbits (“what worked for me”), quaint personal anecdotes, a few inspirational stories, and my idea of best practices in the non-profit sector.”
I’ll hold onto this as a reference and continue to study it.
